Hello, I’m considering entering the PATH System being that I am a single mom of 3 boys, moving back to ny due to me being unable to afford rent, utilities, and childcare here in virginia, originally to stay with my grandmother. I am a new york native and a licensed nurse, so i am employable, but I have no other family besides her and absolutely nowhere to live, as well as no child care so I can’t work . She has now become ill and I am unable to stay with her, not to mention she’s in a one bedroom handicapped NYCHA apartment. I’ve bee through the path system before but was rejected because of my children’s father making us ineligible. We’re now not together and I need to know with my grandmother’s condition and her stating I’m unable to live there, will I likely be eligible for path or coalition of the homeless’ services!? Please help, thank you!!

    • EBourinaris says:

      Hi Lex,

I don’t work for the PATH system. Your best bet is to reach out to PATH or Coalition for the Homeless directly to ask them.

Coalition for the Homeless runs a same-day, walk-in help for New Yorkers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. No appointment is necessary. Because they are limited in the daily number of clients they can serve, please arrive at their offices, located at 129 Fulton Street in lower Manhattan, before 9am to sign up and receive assistance on a first-come, first serve basis. Please read more info here about it: http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/pages/are-you-homeless

You could also try going to the PATH central intake office at 151 E. 151st Street (between Walton and Gerard Avenues) in the Bronx to ask them. They are open 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day.

      Good luck,
      Eleni

    • EBourinaris says:

      Hi Ann,
I can’t promise that they will take you as a family because I don’t work for either of these organizations so I don’t know the specifics of the way they work. Here are some resources that might be able to help. Let me know how it turns out.

For PATH you will need to bring:
      - Proof of identification such as welfare ID card, green card, driver’s license, government ID card, passport/visa, or picture employment card. If you do not have a picture ID, you can use a birth certificate, social security card, Medicaid card, identity card in the public assistance system, or a pay stub.
      - You also have to show proof of homelessness. For example, they may ask for a letter from the family you are staying with or other relatives indicating that they are not allowing you to stay with them and you will need proof of marriage so that you can be admitted as a family.

I’m 23 turning 24 and I am 4 months pregnant. I am currently residing with family however I have been told I need to be out before the baby is here. I am not married nor am I with the man who’s child I’m bearing. I’m scared of being in a shelter as I’ve been in one without a child and it was horrifying, I can not imagine being in one with a child. Please help me!

Where are you located? Try using our LiveHelp feature on the upper right corner of our website http://www.lawhelpny.org – they may be able to refer you to an organization that might be able to assist. Since we would need more information to make a referral, this is a private chat feature with someone from LawHelpNY.

  8. Stephany says:

I have been living in my car for the past two weeks, the residence that i was living in housed five people and I was the only one not sleeping in a room with four dogs, There was a lie that was made up saying that I wasnt going to pick up my cousin from work and mind you is 30 yrs old and is able to get around freely. I am currently out of work on doctors orders and currently have no diagnosis for my illness. My aunt was all the way in las vegas and stated to everyone else before she said to me that I don’t do anything and that she is tired of the bullshit, that I am nosy and wants me out of her living room, mind you I have no where else to go but yet she complains and moans about all of my business and tells everyone that I am full of it. So I moved my things in my car and my mothers and moved into my car just sleeping where I can. When she is confronted she and her son lies again and says that I was never talked to that day which I called the son directly. She says I’m always in the way when company comes and that I don’t know my place and I come and go as I please even though I claim sick. But being in severe pain and swelling prevents me from doing a lot of actions, I am also a type ! diabetic with many other medical and mental needs but says that I am faking it. I am tired of the discomfort of being around my own so called family. My food is always getting taken and eaten, eventhough I have foodstamps I am still not able to eat properly, so that resulted me being in my car. I am always the one being wronged for being around or in the house, I didnt know what else to do. I really need help, I need a place to lay my head and at least have proper food in my stomach.

This resource has all the information you need on how to prepare for your visit and the documentation you need: http://sites.lawhelp.org/documents/495511Path%20KYR%205-2-11.pdf

Hi.. wil me and my boyfriend are 24 yrs old doubled up living in a room with two kids a boy and girl. His mother no longer wants us living there so we have to leave ..I’m the only one working as of right now..but what I really wanted to know is will they allow us to apply as a family, because he’s the father of my youngest child not the oldest tamikagraham22@Yahoo.com if you would like to email me

    • Wil says:

      Hello Tamika,

If you can bring the birth certificate of your youngest child that shows he is the father along with a letter from his mother that states that you are no longer able to stay with her, this can help you get admitted to a shelter as a family. However, we are not PATH and can not verify for sure. You just have to go to the Central Intake office and complete an intake. They will let you know at that time what type of shelter you qualify for. Their address is: 151 E. 151st Street (between Walton and Gerard Avenues), Bronx. They are open 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day.
      Best of luck.

Maria, if you are coming from out of state you may face more challenges. There are already limited shelters for NYC residents and the priority is giving to residents not people that want to move to NYC.

      Dear Tina,

They can either try to go into PATH but in order to enter as a family they will need to show a birth certificate for the baby that shows they are both the parents. The PATH Central Intake office at 151 E. 151st Street (between Walton and Gerard Avenues), Bronx. They are open 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day.

They can also try these other NYC shelters in NYC: http://www.coalitionforthehomeless.org/pages/are-you-homeless

hi i am a 23 year old mother of 2 from sc and i was supposed to be moving to ny by next month with my husband but we got into a domestic violence dispute a few months ago in front of my children and i am still willing to move to ny but we were supposed to start out with staying with his family but since we aren’t gonna be together anymore they don’t want to help me and i wanted to find out if i am still eligible for help with PATH

    • Wil says:

      Brittany,
Im sorry to hear of the issues with your husband. Please note that you should not make a plan to move to NYC and expect to go directly into a shelter. If possible, you should try to find someone to stay with in NYC temporarily while you go visit the intake office of PATH or other homeless shelter programs in NYC, see a list here: http://www.hud.gov/local/ny/homeless/familiesshelters.cfm

It could take you a few days to visit the intake of PATH or any of the other programs above until you can be certain that one will take you. Without doing intake with any of them no one can safely say if you will be eligible (a lot of it depends on whether you have all the paperwork and proof of homelessness that they require).

If you want to be more certain if you could be eligible before making the move to NYC, please contact the Homeless Rights Project Hotline: 1 (800) 649-9125. They do telephone intake for homeless families with children every Tuesday from 10:00AM-12:00PM. They may be able to advise on what shelter may be able to take you in.
      Best of luck,
      Wil

Hi, I’m 23 years old and I just had a baby about 8 months ago. I live with my child’s father who is verbally abusive. I am afraid that I will snap one day I really can’t take it anymore but I have no place to go. I’ve heard through the grapevine that the shelter system is not a good place to have a child and that they place you in ruff neighborhoods. Is it at all true? I really need help I feel something bad is going to happen.

  45. Mickeathan says:

My name is Mickeathan and i am 20 years old. i got home last night from work the locks were changed. the person i was staying with left me without a place to stay or without a word they were leaving (i was not on the lease). im currently in my neighbors home and i cant stay here i dont know these people. i dont know where my mother or father is my father is in the army and my mom left me when i was 16. last i heard she went back to her country. ive been on my own since my mom left me. i have no kids but i have a job. i need help. i need short term assistance i need only less than a month to make enough where i can move in somewhere immediately. i see that i need proof of homelessness but how would you say i obtain that?

    • Wil says:

      Hello,

Im sorry to hear that you were locked out with no warning. You are correct showing proof of homelessness will be tricky, however, you may still be able to qualify if you give PATH all of this information and they have a chance to review it and confirm this.

To help with this, it may be better for you to first go to a homeless advocacy group that can help getting you placed in a shelter. The best one in NYC is: Coalition for the Homeless
      at 129 Fulton Street
(corner of Nassau Street), Lower Manhattan.
Walk in Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from
9 am–2 pm (or first 50 clients) and Wednesday
and Friday from 9–11 am (or first 30 clients).
      Directions: 2, 3, 4, 5, J, M, or Z train to Fulton
Street, or A or C train to Broadway/ Nassau.

Coalition for the Homeless will review your case closer and if you may have a problem with PATH they can help place you somewhere else.

So, my suggestion would be to go to Coalition for the Homeless first and see what they can do.
      Best of luck!
      Wil

My father is off the map. I have no kids but I have a job. I need help. I need short term assistance I would say less than one month to earn enough to find a place of my own. I see that I need proof of homelessness but how would you say I obtain that?
